What is an SVX?

SVXfiles Subaru Performance and Repair is dedicated to the task of keeping SVX's on the road. What is an SVX, you ask?

The SVX was Subaru's attempt to enter the once-popular luxury/performance car category.  The prototype was designed by renowned designer Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign.  Subaru produced around 25,000 SVX's from 1992 through 1997 (about 14,000 of these were imported to the United States).

The most striking feature of the car is the windows.  The window design of the SVX was created with the goal of good aerodynamics, unobstructed visibility and a distinctive appearance.  The car sold for between $28,000 and $35,000.

Unfortunately, due to a number of factors, the SVX never attained popularity.  Declining sales led to the eventual discontinuation of the model in 1997.

It is not known how many of these Luxury Touring Coupes are still on the road; many are being dismantled and sold for parts, as the resale value has never reflected the true worth of the car.  Aftermarket parts are almost non-existent and factory replacement parts, if even available, reflect the exorbitant pricing associated with the original cost of the car.

For those who have driven one, however, the appeal of owning one is completely understandable.  The state-of-the-art features built into the SVX were decades ahead of their time, and the power and handling are remarkable, thanks to the powerful 3.3L horizontally opposed "Boxer" 6 cylinder engine and full-time all-wheel-drive.

The question remains, then, "Where can an SVX owner go to find parts for and people who are knowledgeable about their car?"

The answer is here: SVXfiles Subaru Performance and Repair.  From (not so) simple tune-ups to custom suspension modifications and exhaust systems, we are constantly trying to find ways to enhance the SVX driving experience.
